Welcome to the Horndean Amateur Theatrical Society Web Site.  The Horndean Amateur Theatrical Society (or HATS as they are more commonly known) is a small and enthusiastic amateur dramatics group dedicated to the production of plays, revues and other dramatic work for the general public.  First established in 1948, we are proud to celebrate this, our 70th year.  See a synopsis and pictures of our most recent production.

The society is based at Merchistoun Hall in Horndean, Hampshire, the premises of the Horndean Community Association, of which HATS is a Section.

Throughout it's long history, HATS has produced a wide range of plays, but specialises in comedies, farce, light drama and thrillers.  Although the play scripts are by well established and popular playwrights, including Alan Aykbourn, Ray Clooney and Brian Clemens, all of the production and staging is carried out by members of the group.  Staging a play involves a wide range of activities, including set design and building, lighting and sound production, costume and make-up and stage management.

HATS meets every Friday evening (except during August) at Merchistoun Hall.  We normally produce three plays a year in the Spring, Summer and late Autumn, each play having a ten to twelve week rehearsal schedule.  The group rehearses each Friday evening and also on Sundays towards the end of the rehearsal schedule.  Additionally, a number of set-building and technical "set-up" sessions are organised for the production team.

HATS organises a range of social activities for it's members throughout the year which are always well attended.  Past activities have included skittles evenings, clay pigeon shooting, ice skating and treasure hunts as well as visits to both amateur and professional theatre.

We are always pleased to welcome new members.  The Society is open to anyone over the age of 16 with an interest in Amateur Theatre.  New members may have the opportunity to take on an acting role; but if they are more interested in the "backstage" aspects of amateur theatre, there is a wide range of production jobs in which they can be involved.  Existing HATS members are always on hand to offer any guidance or advice that may be required.

More information about HATS can be found on the 'Today's HATS' page.  If you have any queries, or would like to come along and meet us on a Friday evening, visit the 'Contact Us' page.
