Hello, we’re Horndean Amateur Theatre, a small amateur dramatics group based in southeast Hampshire.

We specialise in comedies, light drama and thrillers, and have performed more than 240 plays over 7 decades. We would be delighted if you could join us, in the audience of our next production, or as part of our group.

Past productions

Snow White, the Pantomime

A pantomime packed with all the usual innuendo, old jokes, messy slapstick, dodgy singing, and a set of dwarfs that includes Stumpy and Sleazy.

A Bunch of Amateurs

A faded Hollywood action hero is tricked into playing King Lear in an amateur charity production at Stratford, a sleepy village in Suffolk.

Our group

We meet every Friday at 7:30pm and met online throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Since June 2021 we’ve been using our new rehearsal venue – Napier Hall in Horndean.

Our members often comment that we are a friendly group and we are proud of our 70-year heritage spanning three generations. The majority of us live in the Horndean and Waterlooville area, but some travel from as far afield as Petersfield and Southsea.

Our membership is drawn from a diverse range of sectors including teaching, retail, social work, administration, accountancy, librarianship and IT support. We always offer a warm welcome to new members, with or without any previous experience. We respect diversity and equal opportunity through fostering an inclusive culture of widening participation.

As a community-based group, we aim to stimulate an interest in amateur dramatics and try to provide our members with the opportunity to be involved in any aspect of amateur theatre. Above all, we like to make it fun!

We have typically staged three or four productions a year and try hard to provide all our members with the opportunity to take an acting role or, if they prefer, to try their hand at anything from the wide range of backstage activities needed, such as:

  • Set and prop building
  • Costume
  • Sound production
  • Stage lighting
  • Make up
  • Choosing plays
  • Directing
  • Poster design
  • Organising social events

If you are over 18 and would like to be part of our future, do get in touch.

About us

For most of the last 70 years we were known as the Horndean Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS) and operated from Merchistoun Hall in Horndean, as a section of the Horndean Community Association (HCA).

The COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible for us to continue meeting at Merchistoun Hall and this and a number of other factors prompted us to end our long relationship with the HCA in October 2020.

In April 2021, we rebranded ourselves as Horndean Amateur Theatre and we are in the process of applying for charitable status. Since June 2021 our new rehearsal home has become Napier Hall in Horndean.
